In this crazy world why is it that we simply exist from day to day, seemingly in continuous pursuit of problem solving objectives, be they those of your employer, your family, a child’s demands, we seem to be on this hamster wheel that never stops turning. There is an old cliché that tells us to stop and smell the roses, perhaps this is the better way to go. A “crooner” many years ago had an album, yes, a ling playing record, remember those, this was tiled “Stop the World, I want to get off” — if we apply this to the purpose of this article, let’s stop the madness and squeeze in some holiday and travel time.  In South Africa we are blessed, yes we might have experienced a little political turmoil but hey, so has Sri Lanka, the English parliamentarians haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory either, we are blessed with many destinations, many accommodation options and a climate that is often described as moderate in that day time temperatures in winter, yes winter, are on average more than 22 deg. C and rainfall, except perhaps in the Western Cape, is quite limited. Mist areas of Southern Africa experience light summer rains, often limited to afternoon shows and thundershowers particularly in the higher lying areas.  Our main tourism destinations are the game reserves and the Western Cape, centred around Cape Town, one of the internationally acclaimed and mist sought after travel destinations in the world. Unfortunately for our family, this is a nine hour drive and an expensive flight from East London, but certainly a destination we often visit, there is a great web site www.staysa.co.za which includes a travel guide and general information on Cape Town and many other areas.  Think about this for a moment, we work approximately 260 days of each year, we work in order to be awarded 15 days leave, if we are normal, we dedicate some 5 or so of those to family functions and that leaves us about two calendar weeks, weekends included, to have a holiday. Subject to all other conditions being acceptable such as budget, children’s school and sport commitments, both adults being able to be on leave simultaneously, the car being on good order, the kennel available for the dogs, whew, it’s actually amazing that we ever manage to leave home at all!  What we try and do as a family is to escape on weekends, at least once per month, this being our objective anyway, we target short trips usually less than two hours from home. We are blessed in owning holiday accommodation in Port Alfred, approximately one and a half hours drive from home. We go there if we are short of a better plan or if it’s been a last minute travel decision. Other recent destinations that are worth recommending in the Eastern Cape are Storms River Mouth, the Baviaanskloof, Addo Elephant Park, Seagulls Hotel on the Wild Coast, all being great short stop travel destinations in South Africa.  The moral of this story, make it your business to hop of the hamster wheel now and again, work to live, don’t love to work, quality family time is more important than we think it is sometimes.   YOUR INPUT IS CRITICAL…….. As the holidays are drawing closer and you may be traveling by air to visit friends and relatives, I’d like to talk to you about some of the health concerns associated with flying and what you can do to ensure that you can stay healthy and enjoy your trip.

Airplane Cabins A Potential Breeding Ground for Illness

To begin with, air quality on most commercial air carriers is very dry, about 50% recirculated, and who knows how good, or how clean, the air filters are. You might wonder why not simply add a humidifier to the cabin air? Well, to do so would mean to increase the chances of bacteria, fungi and molds reproducing in that enclosed space that can lead to upper respiratory and other illnesses. When flights are at capacity for passengers, your chances of catching a cold or the flu from fellow passengers are much higher than traveling on a bus or a train because of the “canned” air.

There can also be a higher level of ozone in cabin air which can affect infants, those with asthma, and the elderly in how they exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Breathing is typically more shallow in these passengers and oxygen intake while flying might be decreased. This could result in asthma attacks or a condition like hypoxia, a condition caused by lack of oxygen.

Even though these potential health concerns exist, there are some important things you can do to help keep you bug-free and breathing easy on your flight:

- Immunity boosters like Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, will keep your immune response high to ward off any onboard infections.
- Hydrate: Pre/during flight, drink water. Most airport waiting areas have bottled water available at food kiosks and on board. Avoid excessive alcohol or caffeinated drinks as they can dehydrate you.
- Using a saline nasal spray during your flight will keep your nasal passages moist and less irritated. Makes it harder for bugs to gain entry.
- Get enough sleep before you fly. Adequate rest will also help boost your immune response. And you can take short naps during your flight as well.
- Wash your hands with hot water and soap before boarding and bring a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your carry on that you can easily access.
- If you are immunodeficient with a chronic illness and must fly, you might consider wearing a HEPA filter face mask specially formulated to keep out viruses and bacteria. It could prevent you from starting off your holiday visit in the local ER.
- Those with special oxygen needs should check with your airline carrier. Federal Aviation rules prohibit you carrying your own oxygen tank onboard. Airline carriers will provide passengers with oxygen for an extra fee.

Prolonged Sitting Poses Special Problems

For the past 10 years, medical research and the Federal Aviation Authority have been aware that air flight can contribute to the development of deep vein thrombosis, or blood clots, in passengers from prolonged sitting during longer flights. However, a few simple things can prevent you from getting a blood clot:

- Walk to the lavatory several times to get your circulation moving.
- Do calf muscle stretches. Flex your toes toward, then away from you.
- Drinking water also helps prevent blood clots.
- Avoid alcohol and sedatives which contribute to circulation slowing.
- Shift your position several times to prevent blood pooling in legs.
- Consider wearing support hose during your flight.

Avoid Airplane Ear

Another potential health concern that can affect you while flying is a condition called barotrauma, or airplane ear. This occurs when the air pressure in your middle ear and the air pressure in your environment are out of balance. You feel it by your ears popping at the start of your flight when your plane climbs and at the end of your flight when it descends. Some stuffiness may result in your ears with muffled hearing. Most people, however, experience only some momentary popping sensations which can alleviated by:

- Chewing gum, yawning, or even swallowing that will correct the air pressure difference your inner ear experiences.

Airplane ear, in some cases, can be more serious and require the attention of a physician. If you experience these symptoms, please see a doctor at your earliest convenience after flight:

- Severe pain and/or bleeding from the ear.
- Hearing loss and/or tinnitus, a ringing, in your ear.
- Vertigo, or a dizzy, spinning sensation.

While there are some real health concerns to be aware of associated with flying, for the most part it should be an enjoyable part of your travel that gives you a little extra time to read a book, talk to a fellow passenger, plan your destination activities, or even take a nap. Single Travellers To Increase By 31% – Are Advertisers Ready?

A recent report by Mintel revealed that the number of single person holidays has grown by over five percent in the past five years. Although a relatively small proportion of the overall holiday market, solo travel is significant within certain groups with a third of single person households under the age of 65 stating they had taken a solo holiday.

Long-haul destinations seemed to be the most popular choice of holiday with more than one in eight long-haul holidays being taken by a solo traveller compared to one in twenty in holidays overall.

Tom Rees, a Senior Travel Analyst at Mintel, said that “the market potential for holidays targeted at singles is huge and is set to grow even more. Single person households now account for just under one third of all those in the United Kindgom.” He went on to say that over the next twenty five years the singles population is forecast to grow by 31%, and will be accounting for about 45% of the adult population.

So, with over 5 million people set to take a solo holiday this year, it is surprising that the results on search engines are not as targeted or competitive as they might be. For example, search queries such as “holidays for singles over 50″ or even “holidays for single people” result in listings advertising holidays for single people, parties for singles and online single dating. The natural (organic) results display far more relevant websites, but I can’t help but feel that those travel operators, hotels and resorts that do not rank well naturally are missing out. A well thought out campaign with engaging creative and targeted landing pages for solo travel would, I am sure, return a good return on investment (ROI) as currently competition is weak. Stealing a march on your competition would not only allow for better Click Through Rates (CTRs) but also allow a much higher Quality Score and consequently lower CPCs to be achieved much quicker on your Pay Per Click (PPC) campaigns.
